The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Thrift Shop is among the many (non touristy) things I have yet to see in NYC...
Vintage Lagerfield, YSL and Thierry Mugler pieces hang resplendent on the racks, brand new Carolina Herrera cashmere and pleated print silk skirts go for US$175 (she donates pieces to the Center to help raise funds for their cause), vintage costume jewelery that's wonderfully preserved, softly gleaming pearls and oversized rings lie in 40s styled cosmetic boxes, and Chanel Chanel Chanel!
There are racks full of emerald shantung and satin lapels, linen and rayon, polka dot trims and cashmere, claret and coffee silk chiffon. All the luxuriant colours and textures and the hint of lavender make this place a real keeper.
It's a small and clean but unremarkable space, the intimate dimensions of whoch encourage customers to talk to one another. The service is excellent and chatty with wonderfully refined taste, it's a volunteer cast of Upper East Side grande dames who are helpful, friendly, and endlessly entertaining.
And the best part? You'll be helping others with every purchase you make. So go crazy! It's for a good cause. None of that post-retail-therapy-guilt.
